Nothing at All

NOTHING AT ALL

I can’t abide the river
Flowing like a satin ribbon
Tucked inside my hurting soul
is the music of God’s promise
Sweet and soulful, pure and happy
Such a contrast, born of love’s creative
power to make something
come from nothing
nothing… at all

I still just stand there watching, drinking
Frozen like a glowing angel
Burned into your fleeing vision
Life is not some altercation
Between you and a Sunday mission
Rest my brother, Rest in Jesus
Lay your ruddy burdens down
and follow Jesus’s love,
And God’s great mercy

I was there last Friday night
And saw you playing plastic retunes
like you were a broken record
I didn’t want your eyes to see me
I didn’t want to say how sorry
I was to see you slipping
All… away… in fear
Oh, your life’s meaning, sold like cornflakes
Like some stupid TV add for beer

Snow is falling, and it’s dark now
Life is passing like a harlot
Bidding everyone to worship
Screwing everyone before
They can do the same to her
Sorrow’s kissing your cold forehead
Lips like mother’s, heart like evil death
Brother, brother, let me hug you
Let me show you that God loves you

Platinum is lonely, weeping
Steel is bending bound to freedom
Bronze is barely even smiling
Gold is risen up from crucifixion
I will wait for you till morning
Then I have to go and meet the Master
Jesus coming back like He left
Clouds around him, clothed in glory
Shining like the very sun at midday
And healing in His wings
