WHY?

WHY?

Why
Can’t we live
within love
why
can’t we give
one another
the respect that we all need

Why
is this cloud
hanging over us
like an anvil in the sky
Why

Why
do we abandon and desert
our fellow human beings
and the world of living things
Why
Why
Does the dust of our disease
seep into our pleas
for justice and our simple need for safety

Why
does angry war not cease
and the mind of pride increase
till no one is safe from death
like a rose in winter’s breath

Why .. why... why

Why
when the spring returns with grace
do we not look on her face
and sing?
Why
do we not begin to bring
each other 
do we not embrace 
our mother
in special acts of kindness
Why

Why
is the soul so lost in fear
till we push us all away
till we lose the narrow way
of trust
we trade intimacy for lust
Why
Why ...why ... why?
